In 1999, Klopf was commissioned to adapt and extend an old house in the historic part of the city of Hohenems. This was the artist’s first architectural project. The aim was to adapt the house to make it suitable for both public and cultural purposes as well as private usage. Correspondingly, the ground floor was conceived as a relatively neutral space for exhibitions, readings or small concerts, and the two upper floors were designed for private use. Overall, the design reflected the specific historical and urban situation of the house. The R-House was also intended to have an animating effect on its street, Marktstraße, which had been negatively affected by transit traffic.
