Der Ausgangspunkt von Karl-Heinz Klopfs Serie Streets (1996–fortlaufend) ist seine Faszination für piktogrammartigen Darstellungen von Straßenzügen in Japan. Aus der typischen Gestaltung derartiger Standortspläne entwickelte er ein System, bei dem er von Gebäuden, in denen er vorübergehend wohnt, die umliegenden Straßenzüge zeichnet. Daraus fertigt der Künstler Plandarstellungen in der spezifisch japanischen Typologie, die er auf ein Fenster des von ihm bewohnten Raumes montiert und fotografiert.
Der Ausblick aus dem Fenster koppelt somit zwei unterschiedliche Informationsebenen der örtlichen Gegebenheit: die Plandarstellung mit dem vagen Bild des Ortes.

The original impetus of Karl-Heinz Klopf’s photographic series Streets (1996–ongoing) came from his fascination with the pictogram-like representations of streets in Japan. Based on the typical design of such location maps, he developed a system in which he draws the surrounding streets from buildings in which he temporarily resides. The artist then creates map representations in the specific Japanese typology and mounts them on a window of the room he is using.
The view from the window couples two different levels of information about the location: the map representation and the vague image of the place.
