Die gezeigten Arbeiten in der Werkschau Komplex von Karl-Heinz Klopf kreisen um Themen wie Urbanisierung, Globalisierung oder digitale und mediale Vernetzung, die der Künstler dem exemplarischen sozialen Raum des Individuums gegenüberstellt. Es werden Filme, Fotografien und Installationen präsentiert, die über einen Zeitraum von vierzig Jahren entstanden sind. So beginnt die Ausstellung mit der frühen Fotografie K aus dem Jahr 1981, einer quasi-selbstbiographischen Setzung, der zum Schluss zwei Standbilder aus Nesting Endless (2021) gegenübergestellt werden, einem Film, der eine Hommage an den austro-amerikanischen Künstler-Architekten Friedrich Kiesler darstellt. Dazwischen liegt u.a. das Langzeit-Projekt Streets (ab 1996, bis heute fortgesetzt), eine fotografische Serie, die sich auf die räumliche Orientierung an verschiedenen temporären Wohnorten des Künstlers bezieht. Eine Auswahl von rund 30 Fotografien der Serie zieht sich wie eine urbane Skyline über mehrere Galeriewände hinweg.
Klopfs Ansatz einer Verzahnung von räumlicher Struktur und Architektur kommt auch in den eigens entwickelten Displays und der Ausstellungsanordnung zum Ausdruck. Eine Raum-im-Raum-Installation schafft mit Elementen aus Glas, einer Raumstütze und einer Projektionsbox eine eigene Architektur, die als Trägerin eine Gruppe von Arbeiten aufnimmt. Die Fotoserie Chrystie Street und der frühe Super8-Film Typing on the Windy Film Set (beide von 1987) sowie die Computeranimation Studio (2000) verweisen in diesem Ensemble auf die vielfältigen Bezüge von realem, digitalem und fiktionalem Raum. Mit seinen Arbeiten reflektiert und dokumentiert der Künstler nicht nur Körper und Struktur gebauter Umgebungen, sondern auch die weitgreifenden Veränderungen, die jüngste Technologien durch die digitalen Datennetze oder das Internet als abstrakte gesellschaftliche Architekturen mit sich bringen. Der Film Environments (1998) stellt eine bis heute faszinierende Bestandsaufnahme der frühen Erwartungen und Versprechen dar, die eine globale User:community an das junge Medium Internet hatte.

The works shown in Karl-Heinz Klopf’s exhibition Komplex revolve around themes such as urbanization, globalization, and digital and media networking, which the artist contrasts with the exemplary social space of the individual. Films, photographs, and installations created over a period of forty years are presented. The exhibition begins with the early photograph K from 1981, a quasi-autobiographical work, which is juxtaposed at the end with two still images from Nesting Endless (2021), a film that pays homage to the Austro-American artist and architect Friedrich Kiesler. In between lies, among other things, the long-term project Streets (started in 1996 and continuing to this day), a photographic series that refers to the spatial orientation of the artist’s various temporary places of residence. A selection of around 30 photographs from the series stretches across several gallery walls like an urban skyline.
Klopf’s approach of interlinking spatial structure and architecture is also reflected in the specially developed displays and the exhibition layout. A room-within-a-room installation uses elements of glass, a pillar, and a projection box to create its own architecture, which serves as a support for a group of works. The photo series Chrystie Street and the early Super 8 film Typing on the Windy Film Set (both from 1987), as well as the computer animation Studio (2000), refer in this ensemble to the diverse relationships between real, digital, and fictional space. With his works, the artist reflects on and documents not only the body and structure of built environments, but also the far-reaching changes brought about by recent technologies such as digital data networks and the Internet as abstract social architectures. The film Environments (1998) presents a fascinating overview of the early expectations and promises that a global user community had for the young medium of the Internet.
